Let me introduce myself…

I’m Anabelle [she/her] and I’m here to smash the (copywriting) patriarchy.

You’ve heard the saying “selling is service.”

But today’s copywriting methods use hidden manipulation tactics (which I call the Invisible Copy Bully) to convince people to buy.

And that doesn’t serve anybody but the seller.

I believe . . . copy doesn’t have to bully people to be effective.

I believe . . . copy can be empowering, not oppressive.

I believe . . . copy can be liberating for both you and your clients.

Let me introduce a better way to write copy: Liberation Copywriting.

I see Liberation Copywriting as the antidote of what I like to call the Invisible Copy Bully.

The Invisible Copy Bully relies on psychological tricks to get people to buy, even if it’s not in their best interest.

These persuasion tactics take advantage of how people’s brains work at the subconscious level, so potential clients aren’t even aware of what’s really going on when they feel compelled to click “buy.”

Liberation Copywriting, on the other hand, respects your audience and asks for the sale while regarding your potential clients as equal partners.

It’s built on shared values and a shared vision, which brings your audience IN by focusing on the positives.

Just as importantly, Liberation Copywriting rejects the “savior” complex of the Invisible Copy Bully, accepting your potential clients as they currently are, rather than treating them as a problem that needs solving.

Liberation Copywriting will totally transform the way you sell (for the better!).

It’s a radically different approach to doing business that still gets the results you desire.

By working with me, you will:

  • Learn why conventional copywriting is actually oppressive and patriarchal.

  • See copywriting as a way to genuinely love and support your audience.

  • Create copy that aligns with your values (if you choose to do copy coaching).

  • Come away with a new understanding of how to write effective copy.

  • Feel a lot better about how you sell.

Selling really can be service.

Because we all win when we empower each other.

About my work

Hi, I’m Anabelle.

anabelle malcolm feminist copywriter copy coach headshot.jpg

I’m a feminist copywriter and copy coach, and I help you write (or write for you) effective, values-centered copy without resorting to conventional (and oppressive) copywriting techniques.

Instead, I show you how to approach copywriting in a whole new way, and I do that by teaching copywriting through a feminist lens, navigating the questions that rise up when we start overturning “conventional wisdom” on what makes great copy.

This way, you don’t contribute to oppressive copy culture––and you and your potential clients start off not with a power imbalance, but as partners on equal footing.

I specialize in working with womxn* online entrepreneurs who want to write Liberating Copy without using the Invisible Copy Bully to convince their ideal clients to buy.

*I use the term ‘womxn’ to include cis and trans women, as well as non-binary folks.

I’m also the go-to copy coach for a premium high-level group coaching program made up of entrepreneurial creative womxn.

Between coaching the clients in this program and working with my private clients, I’ve coached over a hundred womxn on connecting authentically with their ideal clients and clearly communicating their core values through their website copy, emails, and social media posts.

I’ve also had several copywriting clients who want me to do the writing for them. But whether I’m coaching or writing, I use Liberation Copywriting techniques to empower both my clients and their audiences.

My background & training

I’m drawn to this work for a number of reasons:

  1. I love words, language, linguistics, and writing (#wordnerd).

  2. I’m passionate about social justice causes, especially feminism and antiracism.

  3. I’ve never felt comfortable with conventional copywriting methods.

  4. I’m a born teacher.

My “formal” background is in education; specifically, social justice-based secondary English education

As a high school teacher, I specialized in teaching writing, and within that, teaching nonfiction genres like personal essays and persuasion (which lend themselves to teaching copywriting!).

I’ve written interdisciplinary writing curriculum for a national educational publishing company that was adopted by the state of California.

I’ve been the project manager for a DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) audit of elementary school-level educational texts for another major educational publishing company.

I’ve studied gender studies at length, and intersectional feminism influences just about everything I do.

(Just in case you don’t already know, “intersectional” means that people have multiple identities that overlap with each other––identities such as race, ethnicity, sex, gender, sexual orientation, [dis]ability, socioeconomic status, religion, size, and more.)

My “informal” background is in perseverance, adaptability, patience, resiliency, and change.

As a military spouse with mental health conditions (ADHD, depression, and anxiety) and a special needs child (ADHD, anxiety, and autism), I’ve mastered making peace with unpredictability and going on to live my life anyway.

I’ve been featured on podcasts like All Up In Your Lady Business, the Go-To Gal Podcast, Women Developing Brilliance, and Cultivating Connections.

Currently, I’m working on becoming certified in feminist copywriting from Kelly Diels, feminist marketing strategist extraordinaire

I’m committed to anti-racist practices in my personal life and in my business. This means I actively seek out ways to further my understanding of how race plays a role in both our society and in my life through books, online courses, webinars, and one-on-one work with antiracist educators and mentors.

Please feel free to join my Facebook group LBAR (Learning to Be Anti-Racist) to get all kinds of resources (plus terrific discussion) on racism and how to dismantle it.

Giving Back

I donate 10% of all revenue to The Loveland Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to serving communities of color, especially Black women and girls, by providing financial support for mental health services.

10 More Things About Me

  1. I currently live in Northern Virginia. (My husband is an active-duty Army officer, and we move a lot.)

  2. I’m an IVF mom to Alex, who happens to be my favorite 10-year-old boy.

  3. I have a Maine Coon mix named Ginny (short for Virginia) and a tortie named Hazel. They love to break into my office!

  4. In my free time, I enjoy listening to podcasts, following the latest news/politics, playing clarinet, knitting, hiking, and reading nonfiction, usually related to personal development or social justice.

  5. I’m a huge Ohio State fan (Go Bucks!) and I love watching college sports, especially marching bands.

  6. I don’t like chocolate. Never have.

  7. My favorite places in the world are Yellowstone National Park, Hawaii, and the Home of the Buckeyes––my hometown, Columbus, Ohio.

  8. I proofread better than anyone I’ve ever met. I just can’t turn off my inner proofreader.

  9. In terms of personality, I’m an Enneagram 4, but I don’t know my wing. I’m also an INFP and an Aries. I guess that makes me a sensitive, fiery, idealistic introvert. #soundsaboutright

10. I can also be a real goofball.

(I don’t take myself too seriously.)
